To Catch a Predator

To Catch a Predator is an American reality television series in which the television newsmagazine show Dateline NBC conducts hidden camera investigations. It was dedicated to impersonating minors and detaining male adults who contacted them for sexual liaisons via the Internet. People were duped into meeting with a decoy under the guise of sexual intimacy, only to be challenged later. In an interview with NPR News, show presenter Chris Hansen stressed that these individuals should be classified as possible sexual predators rather than pedophiles. "Pedophiles have a very particular meaning," he explained, "those who are interested in prepubescent sex." The series started in November 2004 and covered a total of 12 investigations from across the country. With the support of online watchdog group Perverted-Justice, the investigations were carried out as undercover sting operations. Since the third installment, law enforcement and other officials have become involved, with the majority of those apprehended being arrested. Since December 2007, no new episodes have aired. To Catch a Predator has also aired locally on NBC stations WTMJ in Milwaukee, KSHB in Kansas City, and WBRE. To Catch a Con Man, To Catch an ID Thief, To Catch a Car Thief, and To Catch an i-Jacker, which featured iPod thieves, were among the spin-offs that aired in the same format. To Catch a Predator is also broadcast in the United Kingdom on FX and the Crime & Investigation Network, in Australia and New Zealand on the Crime & Investigation Network, and in Portugal on FOX Crime.
