The Cosby Show

From September 20, 1984 until April 30, 1992, The Cosby Show was an American television situation comedy that starred Bill Cosby and aired on NBC for eight seasons. The Huxtables are an upper-middle-class African-American family in Brooklyn, New York, who are the core of the show. NBC's ratings and the sitcom genre were nearly single-handedly revitalized by the show, according to TV Guide. The show had been pitched to ABC, but they turned it down. Entertainment Weekly said that The Cosby Show helped make it possible for a wider range of shows about people of African descent, like In Living Color and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. They were inspired by the material Cosby used to make fun of his own family life in his stand-up acts. That formula would be followed by other sitcoms like Home Improvement and Everyone Loves Raymond in the future. The show inspired a spin-off called A Different World, which ran for six seasons from 1987 to 1993.
