The Andy Griffith Show

The Andy Griffith Show is a popular sitcom that originated in the United States and was shown on CBS from October 3, 1960, to April 1, 1968. Andy Griffith plays the role of a widowed sheriff in the fictional North Carolina town of Mayberry. Mayberry is located in the state of North Carolina. His life is made more difficult by the presence of a deputy who is incompetent but has good intentions named Barney Fife, a spinster aunt who also acts as his housekeeper named Aunt Bee, and an intelligent and observant little son named Opie. His existence is made even more difficult by the presence of local scoundrels, incompetent buddies, and temperamental women. During an appearance on The Today Show, Andy Griffith gave the following response when asked about the era depicted in the show: "Well, despite the fact that we never mentioned the 1930s, and despite the fact that it was filmed in the 1960s, it had the vibe of the 1930s. It was during the time that we were doing it, of a time long since passed." In the entirety of its run, the show never finished lower than seventh in the Nielsen ratings and finished at the top spot in the very last one. According to TV Guide's rankings, it is the ninth-best show in the annals of American television history. During the eight seasons that the show was on the air, neither Griffith nor the show itself won any honors, but series co-stars Don Knotts and Laurence Bavier won a combined total of six Emmy Awards. The show, which was a semi-spin-off from an episode of The Danny Thomas Show titled "Danny Meets Andy Griffith," was successful enough to generate its own spin-off series, Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., a sequel series, Mayberry R.F.D., and a reunion telemovie called Return to Mayberry. Because of the show's ongoing popularity, there is a significant amount of products that is tied to the show. TV Land is airing repeats of the show at the moment, and fans can purchase the entire series on DVD. Additionally, all eight seasons are currently available to watch online through streaming video providers such as Netflix.
