Lost in Space

Lost in Space is a science fiction television series created and produced by Irwin Allen, filmed by 20th Century Fox Television, and shown on CBS. The show aired 83 episodes over three seasons, between September 15, 1965, and March 6, 1968. The first TV season was shot in black and white, but the rest was in color. The Lost in Space movie, based on the TV series, was released in 1998. Though the original TV series concept concentrated on the Robinson family, many later story lines centered on Dr. Zachary Smith, played by Jonathan Harris. Initially envisioned as a completely nasty but incredibly capable would-be saboteur, Smith gradually evolves into the annoying, self-centered, inept foil who provides comedic relief for the program and causes the majority of the episodic tension and misadventures. Smith and the robot were not present in the unaired pilot. A meteor storm in the unaired pilot sent them off course. Smith's sabotage and unintentional presence caused them to deviate from their original path and collide with the meteors in the first episode. They were traveling at such a sluggish speed in the unaired version that they wondered if they were on Mars, yet in the first episode, just seconds of hyper-drive and they were lost, unknown light years from Earth.
