Bob and Margaret

Bob and Margaret is a Canadian/UK animated television series that aired in the US and around the world. The show was conceived by Canadian David Fine and British Alison Snowden and produced by Nelvana, a Toronto animation studio. The series was inspired by the Academy Award-winning short film Bob's Birthday, which won Best Animated Short Film in 1994 and included the same core characters. The show is one of the few Canadian shows that has ever received regular American airtime. When it first aired in prime time on Global Television in Canada, it was the highest-rated Canadian-produced cartoon series ever. Bob and Margaret Fish, a middle-class 40-ish working couple with no children and two dogs named William and Elizabeth, were the stars of the show. Margaret is a chiropodist, and Bob is a dentist. Bob and Margaret are going through a mid-life crisis and dealing with everyday concerns. The banal is frequently the subject of stories, but in an eminently familiar way. From the difficulties of shopping to coping with obnoxious friends who owe them a meal. Bob and Margaret lived in the South London neighborhood of Balham for the first two seasons. They did, however, relocate to Toronto, Canada, for the third and fourth seasons, allowing the authors to explore the humour of cultural clash. The decision was prompted by the realities of funding, which stipulate that certain Canadian tax benefits are contingent on storylines set in Canada. As a result, the change was necessary to keep the show sponsored. The show's creators elected to take an executive role in the final two seasons, reading scripts and providing advice but not getting involved in the details like they did in the first two. Margaret's voice was kept by Snowden, while Bob's was taken over by Brian George, who had previously played Andy Hamilton.
