The Rum Diary

Tired of the clamor and mayhem of New York and the stifling norms of late Eisenhower-era America, itinerant journalist Paul Kemp travels to the unspoiled island of Puerto Rico to write for a little San Juan newspaper managed by the despondent editor Lotterman. Adopting the rum-soaked lifestyle of the late 1950s adaptation of Hemingway's "The Lost Generation," Paul quickly becomes embroiled with a very attractive American woman and her fiancé, a businessman involved in illicit property development dealings. Within this universe, Kemp learns his own voice as a writer and his character.
