The Profession of Arms

Emperor Charles V dispatches Georg von Frundsberg, a German landsknecht, and his troops to Rome in the fall of 1526. Giovanni de' Medici's mediocre papal forces try to pursue them during a severe winter. Nonetheless, the Imperial soldiers get artillery and cross the rivers that block their path thanks to the cunning of its Lords. Giovanni de' Medici suffers a falconet shot to the leg during a fight. None of the treatments worked, and he eventually passed away. Imperial forces converge on the city of Rome. The film depicts the grim reality of war and its lack of heroism in a setting that is both stunning and understated. Following Giovanni de'Medici's death, the commanders of Europe's armed forces made a public vow that they would never again utilize fire weapons.
