Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan's actual story is a compelling quest to overcome unimaginable obstacles and communicate. Helen Keller contracts scarlet fever as a child. She is blind, deaf, and mute as a result of the sickness. Helen is isolated from the rest of the world and is unable to communicate with anyone. Helen's wild rages and outbursts worry her despairing family, as she is frequently angry and desperate. Annie Sullivan, a skilled teacher, is invited by Helen Keller's family to assist her understand the world from which she is segregated, thus releasing her from her internal prison for good. Helen Keller was played by Patty Duke in the 1962 film, which was also remade for television.
