Limite

Limite, the sole feature film directed and written by the Brazilian filmmaker and playwright Mário Peixoto, was produced when he was just 22 years old and is an astounding work of art. This avant-garde silent masterpiece centers on a man and two women who become separated while at sea. Their pasts are revealed through flashbacks that are propelled by the music of Erik Satie, Claude Debussy, Igor Stravinsky, and others. The haunting photograph that inspired the piece was taken by André Kertész and appeared on the cover of a French magazine. Limite, a pioneering piece of independent filmmaking from South America, was notoriously hard to find screenings for during the majority of the 20th century. It is a groundbreaking accomplishment that, with the help of its enduring visual poetry, continues to enchant audiences.
