Farewell

FAREWELL is a complicated and highly intelligent novel that has been plucked from the pages of history and tells the story of an average man who is forced into the largest heist of Soviet material during the Cold War. It is engaging, dramatic, and compelling. Ronald Reagan referred to this piece of history as "one of the most important espionage instances of the twentieth century," despite the fact that it had been virtually forgotten until recently. The first episode of FAREWELL is set in 1981, following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Pierre Froment (Guillaume Canet), a French businessman working in Moscow, develops an odd relationship with Grigoriev (Emir Kusturica), a senior KGB officer who has grown disillusioned with what the Communist ideal has become under Brezhnev. Grigoriev begins to transmit Froment very sensitive intelligence on the Soviet spy network operating in the United States, which is classified as top secret.
