In a quaint theatre in New York City, an elderly magician concocts a diabolical scheme to save a piece of old New York by evoking some genuine dark magic. His plan relies on the fact that he is the only person who can do the trick. Onur Tukel's most recent film, BLACK MAGIC FOR WHITE BOYS, is a weird comedy adventure about gentrification, race, and bodily autonomy in New York City. The film combines harsh truths with fantastic illusions to tell its story. Tukel has entirely revised a project that was previously presented in 2017 at Tribeca as a four-episode series into a nasty and deliciously odd dark comedy with the help of additional footage totaling over fifty minutes. This is an intimate, low-budget tale about the changing face of New York City, and it balances a strain of goofy sweetness with a strain of sharp misanthropy in its narrative.
